When the IronPigs were first introduced in the year 1993, they were known as Ottawa Lynx and they used to play at Ottawa baseball stadium. This team has seen affiliations from many teams like Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles, and now Philadelphia Phillies. When they changed from Ottawa Lynx to IronPigs, fans in the Lehigh Valley welcomed this name and admired it a lot. Currently, IronPigs are Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. In the year 2016, this team was mentioned in the Forbes list as the fourth-most valuable minor league baseball team.
IronPigs saw their seasonal campaign with many ups and downs as, during the first season in the year 2008, they lost 11 games on the trot. They saw their first win against Richmond Braves when they broke their losing streak of 11 matches. The 2010 season for IronPigs brought some positives where they stood first among all affiliated Minor League Baseball teams and fifth in the International League North Division. In September 2011, this team was able to make it to the finals of the Governors’ Cup but unfortunately, they faced defeat in the finals.
In 2012, they managed to win 72 games but lost in 68. They might have not wanted to remember the season of 2014 where they finished at the last position but in the year 2015, they managed to gain their aura back by finishing fifth. 2016 season was also good for IronPigs as they qualified for the Governors’ Cup and broke their record of most wins in a season with 85 wins and 58 losses. It won’t be wrong to say that season 2018 was the best for IronPigs where they fought hard to gain the best record for the season which read 84-56 and they won their first-ever IL North Division title and got IL postseason awards.
As most sports teams have a mascot to represent them, IronPigs have also got an amazing mascot named “PorkChop” which was selected in the year 2007 on the first of December. The very next day on the 2nd of December, the name was changed to ‘Ferrous’ due to certain allegations from the population who called “Pork Chop” as a racist term. Currently, this team has two mascots where one is Ferrous and another is FeFe. FeFe is named because ‘Fe’ is the abbreviation for iron whereas ferrous itself means iron and it wears 26-numbered jersey because 26 is the atomic number of iron.
As mentioned above, the home ground of IronPigs is Coca-Cola Park which is known to be one of the best sports arenas in Lehigh Valley.
